2019 Exhibitions and Events: Important Healthcare IT Conferences

The healthcare industry is ablaze with high-tech processes including remote monitoring, virtual trials, mHealth and digital health assistants, yet the importance of conferences and trade shows cannot be overstated. Attending these events allows professionals in the field to network in person, learn from other experts, share ideas and pitch products.

In that spirit we’ve curated a list of upcoming healthcare IT conferences and trade shows in 2019. While not exhaustive, we’ve aimed to highlight a variety of events from across the US and few further afield too.

HIMSS Conference and Exhibition

February 11–15, Orlando, Florida

This week, the HIMSS Conference and Exhibition brings together around 45,000 attendees from 40 countries to debate important advancements in healthcare technology and explore how tech can be used to improve education, innovation and collaboration.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Susan DeVore, president and CEO of Premier, works with hospitals and other healthcare providers to deliver high-quality and cost-effective health services. She regularly contributes to CNBC, Fox News, Bloomberg, Yahoo, Health Affairs and has been named multiple times to Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People and Top 25 Women in Healthcare.
  • Karen DeSalvo is a physician and professor of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. Her focus is on healthcare, public health, and information technology. She is also the co-convener of the National Alliance to Impact the Social Determinants of Health.
  • Aneesh Chopra, president of CareJourney, served as the first U.S. chief technology officer between 2009 and 2012 and, before that, as Virginia’s fourth Secretary of Technology. He also earned a spot in 2011 on Modern Healthcare’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.

 

Healthcare IT Connect Summit

March 18–20, Baltimore

The State Healthcare IT Connect Summit celebrates its 10th year in 2019, with a keen focus on data governance and interoperability, as well as MMIS procurement, HIX operations, payment reform, population health, program integrity, and data privacy and security.

Conference tracks include: medicaid modernization, modularity and MMIS procurement; state innovation, data analytics and population health management; enterprise systems planning, health and human services integration; compliance, security and combating fraud, waste and abuse (including third party liability); state marketplace reform and managed care optimization; and an emerging technologies forum.

Speakers at the event include:

  • Nina Bradley, operational account coordinator at Change Healthcare, will present under the theme “Leverage and Reuse: Not Just About Technology.” Bradley’s focus is on combining her Six Sigma Black Belt skills and Change Healthcare Pharmacy Benefits Solutions to improve processes, reduce waste and further best practice principles.
  • Cori Cooper, pharmacy program manager at Wyoming Medicaid, is presenting in Track 1: Medicaid Modernization Modularity & MES Procurement. A pharmacist for over 16 years, Cooper has been an associate professor at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy and has served for many years at the Cheyenne, Wyoming VA Medical Center.
  • Rosemarie Day, founder and CEO at Day Health Strategies, will present “A Blueprint for States: Executing Medicaid Expansion and the ACA.” Day has more than  25 years of experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors and served as the founding deputy director and COO of the Massachusetts Health Connector.

 

AMIA 2019 Informatics Summit

March 25–28, San Francisco

This year’s AMIA Informatics Summit is focusing on four main areas: translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, implementation informatics and data science to explore ideas and innovations and blend science-based sessions to further learning. Students, teachers, researchers, vendors and decision-makers will enjoy the summit that combines aims to define and solve complex scientific challenges.

Opening and closing keynote speakers are:

  • Greg Simon, president of the Biden Cancer Initiative, is the opening keynote speaker at the AMIA Informatics Summit. Simon has also served as the executive director of the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force. He was CEO of Poliwogg, a financial services company focused on healthcare and life sciences, and occupied the position of SVP for Worldwide Policy and Patient Engagement at Pfizer.
  • Kathy L. Hudson, Ph.D., is the closing keynote speaker. She is the first CEO of the nonprofit People-Centered Research Foundation, which enables patient-driven research through its national clinical research network. Hudson is also the former deputy director for Science, Outreach, and Policy at the National Institutes of Health.

 

Health Datapalooza

March 27–28, Washington

Health Datapalooza is an event for professionals in the healthcare and technology sectors to debate data and innovations behind health policies and practices. Chief officers (information, medical, innovation), Silicon Valley startups, data experts and patients all gather to find out how data can strengthen the industry.

Speakers include:

  • Todd Park, cofounder and executive chairman of Devoted Health, served in the White House as technology advisor based in Silicon Valley. During that time he brought top technology talent and best practices into the government.
  • Letitia Dzirasa is a pediatrician and health innovation officer at Fearless Solutions. Fearless is a digital services firm specializing in agile development and coaching, geospatial software engineering, and human-centered design.
  • Mandi Bishop, senior research director analyst with Gartner’s CIO Industries Research group, has been a healthcare technologist for two decades, having been a startup entrepreneur and a leader at Fortune 500 technology companies.

Health Datapalooza

Bio-IT World 2019

April 16–18, Boston

With innovations occurring at breakneck speed, Bio-IT is a popular topic, although there is often more hype than substance. That’s one reason the 18th annual Bio-IT World Conference & Expo 2019 is so important. Attendees can immerse themselves in the reality of blockchain, AI, machine learning, data science, deep learning, and IoT. Technical presentations, workshops and education opportunities will allow participants to see technological innovations in action.

  • Data and storage management.

  • Bioinformatics.

Healthcare and IT Marketing Conference

April 17–19, Boston

The Healthcare and IT Marketing Conference focuses on healthcare B2B marketing and offers delegates the chance to learn the latest in content marketing, marketing automation, event marketing, healthcare public relations, branding and media relations.

Speakers include:

  • John Lynn, founder and editor of HealthcareScene.com, which features some 11,000 articles on EMR and healthcare IT and hosts a health IT job board and career blog. Lynn also cofounded two companies: Influential Networks and Physia.
  • Colin Hung, a marketing executive with 10 years experience in healthcare and health IT, is cofounder of the healthcare Twitter chat #HCLDR. Hung writes and blogs for publications such as the Journal of the American College of Radiology and Hospital EMR and EHR.
  • Shahid Shah, who blogs as the Healthcare IT Guy, has also served as a health IT advisor to programs within the National Institutes of Health, CTO of Cardinal Health’s CTS unit, and chief systems architect for the American Red Cross.

Digital Health Conference

April 24–25, Houston

The ways in which modern technologies and digital services are changing directly impact the communication and monitoring of health and well-being. Speakers at the Digital Health Conference 2019 will focus on using digital health technology to reduce inefficiencies and improve delivery of healthcare services for a more people-centred approach.

Speakers include:

  • Joshua Wies, Agewell Biometrics USA, is  a physical therapist with 21 years of experience, focusing on eldercare and rehabilitation. He has contributed his expertise to the development of wearable technologies, practice management and marketing.
  • Nick Desai, CEO OF Heal USA and tech entrepreneur, has raised more than $47 million in venture capital for four startups since 1998.

16th Annual World Health Care Congress

April 28–May 1, Washington

The goal of the 16th Annual World Health Care Congress is to continue its mission of empowering and connecting leaders in healthcare transformation. With some 300 speakers and 1,500 attendees expected, the WHCC19’s focus will be on delivery and payment transformation in the healthcare sector. It offers multiple content tracks including sessions specifically for healthcare chief technical and chief information officers.

Thought leaders and decision-makers from healthcare sectors from around the world will be in attendance for four days of C-Level keynote discussions. Speakers include:

  • Alan Abramson, SVP of Information Services & Technology and CIO at HealthPartners, serves as an advisor to and sits on the board of various organizations such as Normandale Community College, The Health Care Executive Group, University of St. Thomas Graduate Programs in Software, and the BethelBiz mentorship program. He also co-chairs the Minnesota eHealth Advisory Committee.
  • Emily Allen, SVP, Programs at AARP Foundation, started her working life as a special education teacher and school administrator. She moved to the AARP Foundation, first as project director for the Senior Community Service Employment Program, then as director of Workforce Programs, and now sits in her current role as SVP.
  • Sunil Budhrani is CMO at Innovation Health, which is a partnership between Aetna and one of the largest health systems in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, INOVA Health System. Budhrani also cofounded CareClix Telemedicine, a leading pioneer in telemedicine and remote patient monitoring technologies.

CPhl North America Trade Show

April 30–May 2, Chicago

The CPhl North America Trade Show is a recent addition to a 30-year tradition of global pharmaceutical conferences and trade shows by CPhI. With an established market that accounts for around 40 percent of global pharmaceutical sales, this is an important calendar event for many buyers and sellers in the industry. Every year, more than 670 exhibitors take part in this event, and this year there will be a hub for both upstream and downstream pharma processing and manufacturing, of interest to biotechs, big pharma and service providers including CDMOs and CROs.

AMIA 2019 Clinical Informatics Conference

April 30–May 2, Atlanta

Clinicians, data scientists, HIT developers and researchers will be among those attending the AMIA 2019 Clinical Informatics Conference to discuss and learn about the benefits of data driven, team-based  integrated healthcare. With workshops and presentations, attendees will have hands-on experience of evidence-based clinical informatics.

Opening and closing keynote speakers include:

  • Stephen K. Klasko, President of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health, is a leading force in transforming healthcare systems and health education. He is also an author, having recently completed his latest book, “Bless This Mess: A Picture Story of Healthcare in America.”
  • John R. Lumpkin, SVP – Program at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is the closing keynote speaker. Lumpkin is the first African-American director of the state public health agency in Illinois and has championed improvements in healthcare programs, information and technology, emergency and bioterrorism preparedness, infectious disease prevention and control, immunization, local health department coverage, and the state’s laboratory services.

Clinical Informatics

The Patient Experience Symposium

May 1–3, Boston

At The Patient Experience Symposium, you’ll join a community of healthcare advocates and practitioners, students and teachers in discussions about next-generation strategies, ideas and best practices to enhance the patient experience.

Speakers include:

  • Tena Brown, patient advocate at Tenacity Matters, has been in the healthcare industry for more than two decades as a patient advocate, psoriasis consultant, speaker and author.  Her success as an advocate is partly due to her own experience of living with a lifelong chronic illness.
  • Dr. Jay Bhatt is SVP and CMO at the American Hospital Association, president of the Health Research & Educational Trust, and a member of the AHA Center for Health Innovation executive team. He also has responsibility for the AHA Institute for Diversity and Health Equity and has won multiple awards including Crain’s Chicago 40/40.
  • Gigi Fergus is CEO at Memorable Care, a management consultancy firm for transformational leadership in healthcare facilities. The healthcare executive has more than 25 years of experience working in hospitals, both profit and nonprofit.

AI Healthcare Innovation Summit

May 14–15, San Francisco

With the theme “smarter, faster, cheaper patient care,” the AI Healthcare Innovation Summit (part of DATAx San Francisco) will address various healthtech innovations and analytics as means of transforming the health industry. As the name of the event suggests, big data, AI and machine learning will be the weighty topics to analyze.

Big Data & Analytics in Healthcare Summit

May 21–22, Philadelphia

The Big Data & Analytics in Healthcare Summit is a chance for forward-thinking researchers, data scientists and engineers to discuss their latest findings and how they can turn them into opportunities. Attendees will learn about how advances in Machine Learning and AI are being used to streamline processes, increase efficiencies and better understand patients and outcomes.

Speakers include:

  • Mark Pitts, a healthcare analytics executive at SAS, has a career spanning nearly three decades. He was at the University of Florida Health System for 16 years, where he led the IT both in the hospital system and at the UF Physician’s Faculty Group practice.
  • Arumani Manisundaram, founder and CEO of Netrin Health, is a leader in emerging payment models. He is also the founding director for the Center for Connected Health at Adventist HealthCare, a role that saw him help implement ambulatory electronic health record systems, health information exchanges, accountable care organizations and clinical integration networks.

International Health Congress Oxford

June 26–28, Oxford, England

The Oxford International Health Conference brings together health researchers to promote health and wellbeing throughout Europe. Highlighting the link between research and practice, conference delegates will be exposed to research from disciplines such as public health, psychiatry, pediatrics, economics, psychology, statistics, social science and ethics, clinical trial design, health informatics and implementation research.

Rocky Mountain Health IT Summit

July 15–16, Denver

Healthcare leaders from across North America will gather at the Rocky Mountain Health IT Summit to share important insight into the sector. This year much of the focus will be devoted to cybersecurity and privacy issues, with discussions and interactive sessions led by established security professionals and executives from provider organizations.

14th World Congress on Healthcare & Technologies

July 22–23, London

The 14th World Congress on Healthcare & Technologies examines innovative strategies to improve healthcare and emerging technologies. Delegates will learn about the cutting-edge developments in healthcare technologies as well as connect with physicians, technicians, primary care providers and academics.

HLTH

October 27–30, Las Vegas

HLTH’s mission is to innovate the healthcare industry by bringing together industry leaders for discussion and discovery. This event will focus on collaboration by breaking down silos and to disrupt the status quo by looking at innovation and new business models. With around 5,000 attendees and more than 325 speakers at 100 sessions, it’s a significant opportunity to network.

International Conference on Medical Informatics & Telemedicine

August 12–13, Rome

The theme for the 7th International Conference on Medical Informatics & Telemedicine is improved patient care through innovative information technologies. Medical informatics researchers and practitioners from around the world will meet to discuss and share insights with participants. Attendees include professionals from diverse backgrounds such as health and medical informatics, telemedicine, academia, nursing and more.
